Anti-spam plugin testers wantedFiled Under: Asides, plugins
I have been using an experimental anti-spam plugin since this blog was set up. Until now it has been a bit of a hack, but I have been working hard to make it much simpler and now I think, hope, I have achieved that. Before I release it though I would like to get a few people testing it to get their comments.
The first test will be to see if this post gets any comments. If you read this please drop by and write something, anything, to see if you can. If it fails you can use the contact form to let me know, or drop me a note on twitter to @arickmann
Assuming you can leave a comment and are interested in testing the plugin on your own blog let me know and I will mail you a copy.
To give you an idea of its apparent effectiveness, my blog has had 15,000 visits, 122 posts, 513 comments, and to date 658 spams, 200 (ish) of which have come in the past two weeks when I upgraded to 2.5 and had to turn the plugin off for a bit.
It looks like it hasn’t worked and is actually stopping all comments.
Fingers Crossed Everybody! I think it is working this time.

Hi Andrew,
I’m wondering - do you get spam that still goes through Askimet? Since week 41 of 2007 I had a total of 20.656 views, 109 posts and 39 comments (that’s what happens if you dont blog in english :D) - and Askimet caught amazing 3.611 spam-comments. Only occasionally a single spam goes through and pops up in moderation - but as of today, Askimet worked like a charm.

Christoph, Akismet does stop the vast majority of the spam. My spam figures were almost all caught by Akismet. This plugin, assuming I can ever get it to work, prevents it from entering the system in the first place so it never gets as far as Akismet.

Nice, I have heard good things about that plugin. What I am developing is basically a javascript free version of that. The methods are not identical, but the concepts are similar.
I have been using it successfully up until 2.5, and hit a wall. It seems to work sometimes, but not other times.

Without wanting to seem to optimistic I think I have resolved the problem that I was having with the plugin.

Flickster from the Jeffro show here
Glad to hear you’ve managed to fix your problem. Interesting that it can actually be stopped before Akismet, because I rely really heavily on Akismet. Test for bold text More edits.
