WordPress 2.7 Admin Changes

Author: andrew Category: Uncategorized Tags: User Interface

I updated the version of WordPress running on my local installation this morning to find some interesting changes that, if they remain, could impact on your plugins.

This is the view that awaited me:

Each of the menu items on the left open and close as needed. Templates contains everything that is in the design tab now. Utilities features the new inbox (which seems to include notifications about WordPress and maybe new comments, but it doesn’t do anything yet) and some of the contents of the manage menu.

I’m not quite sure how I feel about it yet as I haven’t had much time to try it out, but there is a limit to how many admin changes people should accept so whatever happens with it lets hope they stick with it for a while. Personally I think the admin should be black (black is the new light blue).

YAAIC (Yet another admin interface change) ?? 2.5 was a big leap from 2.3, and 2.7 is yet another jump. I guess we should expect something new in 2.9 ;)
Thanks for the preview!

Flick, it is hard for me criticise the admin design itself, but I do think the frequency is a little too high.

Calin, nice article, thanks for the link.

If I am not wrong, “Inbox” features is kinda something to do with upcoming social networking features of WordPress (inconjunction with BBPress) or even a built-in contact form (which I think is quite impossible).

And you forget the “Media Box” on the new/edit post page which I presume will enable user to see what images or media they use in a post.

Ryan, I have no idea about the social network stuff; it isn’t something I follow, but thanks for the heads up on the media box. I hadn’t even noticed it.

There are a load of changes in the current prototype but I am cautious of listing them all as they might not stay.

I think WP 2.7 Admin panel so conflicated for beginner, but if we could understand the feature I think it's not that bad
