Fun with Minimalism

Posted: 13th Apr 2008, in: General. -

Fun with Minimalism is my first WordPress theme. My intention was to create a theme that was easy to use, contained as little extraneous information as possible and really focussed on the content, instead of the graphics, or any other flashing widgets.

A minimalist theme for WordPress

As this is my first theme, and I was actively trying to avoid graphics and bloat, it is also a fairly experimental one. My intention was that this should provide the information and links where and when they were needed without being too obvious about it.

Included in that is additional user tracking to decide what kind of links the user should be offered, i.e. if the user is looking at a single post and they want to look at an older post, the way they reached that post will determine whether they are offered a choice: The next oldest post, or the next oldest post from the most recent category search the user carried out.

There is also other processing to make it easier to add images, automatic replacement of Ampersands, and the ability to change the key colours depending on category.

There are still things that I am not entirely happy; however, I have decided to release it now for fear that I will endlessly tinker with it if I don’t.

I’ve put together a few short demonstration videos that show some of the build in functionality of the theme. This is my first attempt at any sort of video tutorial so apologies if it lacks a certain something. I hope you find it useful, or at least interesting.

Very cool theme. Sort of off topic, but I was wondering what software you use to make the videos? Thanks!

    Thanks Leland,

I used a freeware tool called Wink.

All very impressive! I would have thought you had done all this for a long time!

    Thanks Peter,

I have built a lot of themes for myself, and I have produced designs that I have subsequently converted but this is my first theme that I intended to release. The process is very different and requires much more thought.
